Table 2 models.sps: SPSS syntax for running the Mocan and Gittings (2003) model as two mixed models

DATA
Mocan.dta, Mocan.sav: Mocan and Gittings (2003) original variables

altsources.dta: Demographics and economic variables from Mocan and Gittings (2003), homicide data from NCHS,
execution data from DPIC

zero_to_0.dta, zero_to_01.dta: Mocan and Gittings (2003) original data, but observations with zero sentences
coded to 0 and .01, respectively, instead of .99 as in the original.

altsources_zeros_0.dta and altsources_zeros_01.dta: alternate data sources as in altsources.dta, but "zero 
sentence" observations recoded as in zero_to_0.dta and zero_to_01.dta.

alternative_deterrence.dta: Original data from Mocan and Gittings, but measuring deterrence based on 
executions lagged by one year and sentences lagged by two, instead of on execution and sentence rates.
