About the Goler T. Butcher Medal
The Butcher Medal was established in 1996 by The American Society of International Law and is only the second medal awarded by the Society to recognize an individual for his or her body of work.  Named in honor of  Goler Teal Butcher, the medal is given "for excellence in international human rights law."

Goler Teal Butcher was one of the foremost international human rights lawyers of her era, often serving  as the conscience of many professional and policy organizations, including The American Society of International Law.   Professor Butcher was a superb, committed scholar and teacher of international law to devoted generations of Howard University law students.  Professor Butcher was further known for her pursuit of justice and human rights through the United Nations, Amnesty International, and the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and its Southern Africa Law Project.

Goler Butcher was a stalwart of the anti-apartheid movement for all of her professional life, developing innovative federal legal approaches still in use.   Such approaches prevent the United States government from violating the rights of African people, and to ensure that the rights of African Americans and others committed to freedom also are not violated.  Her effectiveness as Assistant Administrator for Africa in the Agency for International Development during the Carter Administration was renowned.  Professor Butcher was a skilled administrator and a champion of African development - attributes that prompted her selection by the incoming President Bill Clinton to head his AIDS Transition Team.
